This month, I decided to take a cue from Sally Ball (Foothills Focus author for this month—see page 26) and just let my mind wander to random topics. My mind is a very busy place, so let’s just see where it goes, shall we?
1. Does anyone know when this highly irritating trend started with the improper use of the phrases She and I, He and I, etc.? Instead, it’s spoken and written as Her and I and Him and I, over and over. It just shouldn’t be this hard to use correct grammar and say (or write) She and I or He and I. Is this suddenly being taught wrong in schools? How and when did this become normal among the masses, especially with younger generations? It’s rampant everywhere: on TV, social media, you name it—but it’s so easy to retrain yourself to speak and write these phrases correctly if you’ve inadvertently found yourself following the awful trend. Check yourself by removing the other person in the compounded subject (the and I part of the sentence): “She went to the store” (correct) versus “Her went to the store” (incorrect). I know there are many other egregious grammar issues out there that are worse, but, for some reason, this one is like nails on a chalkboard to me.
2. One of my favorite quotes is from Tony Robbins: “Where focus goes, energy flows. And where energy flows, whatever you’re focusing on grows.” I have found this to be spot-on in my life. The problem with having such a busy mind (and life) is that it can be hard to truly find that focus. However, it is my intent—even though I am not partial to New Year’s resolutions—to focus more on focus next year.
3. I was watching an interview with Jay Shetty a while back. I think it was Mel Robbins who was doing the interview. I had only recently heard of him, but some of his words in this interview really resonated with me:
—“Someone out there would love to live your worst day.”
—“There’s a part of your life that is exactly the life you wanted. As soon as you achieve something, you forget how you dreamt of achieving it.”
—“Where you are today is what you wanted yesterday. And what you want today, you can create tomorrow. But we forget.”
I feel like all this is so true. At least for me. I intend to also keep these thoughts (and goals) in mind in the coming year, when life occasionally becomes overwhelming. It’s a good way to reset.
Well, I’m running out of room and I only have three random thoughts so far. I guess I should do another one of these columns sometime soon. I’ll end with a heartfelt wish to everyone for a beautiful holiday season and a peaceful, safe and prosperous new year. May you achieve whatever dreams and goals you are wishing for.
