The first day of summer is nearly upon us, and there are more fundraisers and outdoor events than there are days on our calendars. Two perennial fundraisers—one benefitting health care and hospice services and another supporting developmentally disabled persons—are happening in July and taking registrations now. Why not sign up or make a donation to sustain these vital programs?

Freedom Run Marks Four Decades of Independence Day Fundraising
Whether you walk, run, stroll or cheer from the sidelines, the Mount Evans Home Health Care & Hospice Freedom Run is a great way to kick off your Fourth of July celebration. Marking its 40th anniversary, the scenic 5-kilometer (3.1 miles) course follows gently rolling terrain through residential areas. It begins at 8 am at Evergreen Middle School and continues beyond the finish line with an after-race party at the Evergreen Athletic Club where participants and their supporters can enjoy music, refreshments and family-friendly activities.

The run is a fun community event with a purpose: funds raised by the Freedom Run will help Mount Evans care for under-insured or uninsured patients. Proceeds will also support services including grief counseling, respite care for family caregivers, and Camp Comfort, a bereavement camp for children.

Early bird registration through June 25 is $40 for adults and $20 for youth under the age of 18. From June 26 until July 3, entry fees are $45 for adults and $25 for youth under the age of 18, with day-of registration at $50 and $30 levels. For more details and to register, go to mtevans.org.

Andy Smith Sr. Charity Golf Tournament Set for July 14 at Hiwan Golf Club
The Mountain Foothills Rotary will host its annual Andy Smith Sr. Golf Tournament on July 14 at the exclusive Hiwan Golf Club. Tournament sponsors and foursomes will help raise money for the Evergreen Park & Recreation District’s INSPIRE Program, Crutches 4 Africa, Resilience1220, and the Mountain Foothills Rotary Foundation.

The mission of the INSPIRE Program is to contribute to the growth and vitality of people with developmental disabilities and their families. It provides opportunities for participants to engage in community activities, recreation, leisure and cultural programs as well as activities to build daily living skills. The ultimate goal is to help persons who are disabled become as socially, emotionally and intellectually independent as possible.

The other tournament beneficiaries are Crutches 4 Africa, which collects used and surplus mobility devices, ships them to developing countries, and distributes them for free to people with physical mobility challenges regardless of their race, gender, tribe, age or religion; Resilience1220, which provides free counseling services to youth ages 12-20 and works to raise awareness of the social, emotional and mental-health issues young adults face; and the Foundation of Mountain Foothills Rotary, a not-for-profit corporation that receives contributions and distributes funds in support of approved community, humanitarian and educational activities.

The tournament check-in is at 7 am with an 8 am tee-off time. In addition to an 18-hole scramble, entry fees include breakfast and lunch, and the chance to participate in tournament hole contests. Players will receive a goodie bag with a golf hat, sleeve of balls, and other items. There will be prizes awarded at the post-tournament luncheon, a raffle, and a silent auction featuring sports memorabilia.
