February offers activities to lift our spirits as we navigate through cold mid-winter days. Gathering to learn more about living with wildlife, taking in a history lesson on Colorado’s involvement with the Civil War, or allowing yourself to be uplifted by musical performances are great options for entertainment and involvement.

History Writer to Discuss Colorado’s Role in the Civil War

Evergreen author John Steinle will deliver a presentation on Colorado’s role in the Civil War on February 23 from 2-4 pm at Conifer Historical Society and Museum on Barkley Road in Conifer. Steinle will speak about the military units formed, the forts that became today’s cities, and the diverse cultural backgrounds of the soldiers who fought side-by-side.

When the Civil War broke out in 1861, our state’s territorial government was firmly in Union hands, and multiple Colorado military units were formed within the Union Army. Forts were built that later grew into communities: Fort Morgan, Fort Collins, Fort Garland, and Fort Lyon. Fighting in the largest battles of the Civil War west of the Mississippi, Coloradans served alongside Hispanic, Native American, and African American Union troops. Steinle will discuss these dynamics, and the atrocities inflicted on Native Americans at the notorious Sand Creek Massacre. For tickets and more details, go to coniferhistoricalsociety.org.
