On my walk this morning, I decided to celebrate Thanksgiving right then and there. It was the most beautiful day imaginable; a balmy 80 degrees, no humidity, a soft caressing breeze, and a Colorado blue sky with billowing clouds preparing for afternoon showers.
Fall is not my favorite season, but a smile crept across my face upon spotting my first golden yellow Aspen leaves… always a day of significance in the cycle of my years.
I leisurely strolled through my woods, immersed in solitude that was only interrupted by the occasional chatter of squirrels, the rustling of leaves and my own footsteps.
Words will never express how much I cherish solitude.
I am trying to live in the moment and not worry about what could be, while at the same time giving thanks for the gift I have, knowing it could be taken at any time.
I give daily thanks for this year’s abundant rain showers, for they have, for now, protected my woods from the devastation of wildfire.
Today is my Thanksgiving Day.

The Blizzard of March 2003
About this time every year, Dougbook sends me this memory of being snowed in at my cabin in Beaverbrook Canyon. The storm snowed for 3 days straight, leaving up to 7 feet of heavy spring snow. It took the county road grader 5 days to reach my cabin. That turned out to...
The White Weasels of Winter
One of the really cool things about my morning solo walks in the woods is that, given enough time, I will eventually observe forest life that no one else sees or even knows about. So, a few days ago, I bundled up and headed out when the temperature was hovering around...
